VINTAGE STYLE FLOUR SACK — Kitchen Wall Art

Inspired by 1930’s graphics, when flour was sold in cotton sacks.
They have ‘A simple Sourdough Bread Recipe 2:2’ printed on them.

SCREEN PRINTED BY HAND
Two colour off-registered Screen Print, onto 100% Natural Cotton.

There is something very genuine in seeing and touching the ink on a natural fibre in our digital age.

The off-registered print is to capture the philosophy of not being perfect. How visually we can encourage people not to be frightened of making mistakes, or making a mess, or to be imperfect. To many people, perfect means artificial, so they strive for Good and not perfection. The idea of being Perfectly imperfect, can be very liberating. It’s after all precisely here where sparks of ideas, creativity and imagination is born.

The design inspiration comes from the great depression, when women noticed that one of their food staples — flour — came in cotton sacks. Desperate and innovative mothers with serious sewing skills made everything from girls dresses (photo below) to boys shirts, Tea towels and even underpants using the fabric.

I have reimagined this bit of history –  A flour sack,  printed with a timeless
Simple Sourdough recipe; designed as modern wall art.

Bringing the old and new together, these are possibly the first ever smart flour sacks; they include a QR code your mobile phone will scan, just by selecting camera and getting close to the code as if your taking a photo, a pop-up will appear which is a link, taking you directly to a step-by-step Video recipe.

Making a Simple Sourdough, Two part video recipe course:
DEE ANGEL BREAD – STARTER 1:2 (10mins video)
DEE ANGEL BREAD – RECIPE 2:2 (10mins)

The recipe has been developed for the past 7 years, from using bread machines to reading Andrew Whitley’s Bread matters. Although very good he included too many options which made it confusing and I found the whole process hard work. For me as a graphic designer who’s work has been to simplify the difficult and with a BA (Hons) titled “Visual Communications” I naturally made notes for my simplified version, one that could be done realistically during a working week, using accessible & economical British white flour: —

If you have time to bake once a week, put 20mins effort and 3hrs of waiting time, this recipe is for you,
your starter will take 7 days to be born but it will stay alive in the fridge forever.
Makes a great alternative to one day-bread course.

From there, as friends and family wanted the recipe, I thought I’ll make it into a cool poster they could hang in their kitchen for reference. And when they joked for a video clip next, so they could see the technique and learn in their own time, I thought – great idea – and so I did it. There is no better way of learning something practical than to be shown how, step by step.

I fast forwarded the video to make it shorter and the voice ended up sounding like the minions, it was unintended as I was going to add some music maybe, but it made everyone laugh, so I thought I’ll keep it as a bit of added fun.

I hope it makes for a great Gift to the aspiring home baker – there are too many good closed books already out there, Hopefully this on the wall will be a good looking reminder.
